The Service People of Pskov in the Time of Troubles (with Reference to Petitions)

Dmitry Liseytsev

Abstract

The article is devoted to historical sources that reveal important details of events during the Time of Troubles in Pskov. The petition of the nobleman Ivan Bedrinskii  discusses the period when Pskov was under the rule of the supporters of False Dmitry II. The arbitrariness of the streltsy forced local nobles to leave the city and join Tsar Vasily Shuysky’s Novgorod followers. The streltsy continued to hold noble property after Pskov was once again under the authority of Moscow. The petition of the Cossack captain Vasily Levashov contains important information about some events from the Time of Troubles: the petitioner participated in suppressing the uprising of Ivan Bolotnikov and the defence of the Pskovian ‘suburb’ Gdov from Swedish troops in 1613. These two petitions demonstrate that there are many opportunities to find information about the Time of Troubles in documents drawn up after the conflict had run its course.
